Who Needs to Register

The FTA expects every taxable person to register and obtain a registration number. That includes mainland companies, free zone companies, and foreign businesses with a permanent establishment in the UAE. Individuals who run a business here must also register once their annual revenue passes the threshold set under the law.

Expecting to pay no tax does not remove the duty. A free zone company that hopes to benefit from special treatment still registers first, and whether the treatment applies is worked out later. Some organisations may qualify for exemption, but that is usually a separate application, so check your category before assuming you are outside the system.

Understanding the Registration Deadline

The corporate tax registration deadline depends on the type of person and on when the business was established or licensed. The FTA has set these timelines through its Decision No. 3 of 2024. Companies formed before March 2024 followed dates linked to the month their licence was issued. Newer businesses generally have a short window after incorporation, commonly cited as three months.

A missed deadline may bring an administrative penalty, so confirm the exact rule for your entity on the FTA website. If you are unsure whether your date has passed, send us your licence date and entity type and we will check it.

What You Should Prepare

  • Certificate of incorporation, memorandum of association, or partnership agreement
  • Trade licence or equivalent document from the licensing authority
  • Identity documents and contact details for owners and managers
  • Details of the authorised signatory and proof of their authority
  • Your financial year dates and the date activity began
  • Registered address, email, and phone number

How EmaraTax Registration Works

  1. Log in to EmaraTax, or create a user account if you are new.
  2. Add or select your taxable person profile.
  3. Choose the Corporate Tax registration service.
  4. Complete the form and attach your documents.
  5. Review the details and submit.
  6. Wait for the FTA’s decision, and keep an eye on your registered email for questions.

Mistakes That Slow Applications Down

Mismatched details. The licence, the application, and the signatory’s documents must agree on names, addresses, and activities.

Unclear authority. Whoever submits must be properly authorised by the company.

Assuming free zone means exempt. Registration is still the first step.

Counting from the wrong date. Some owners wait for their first return period when the deadline is tied to licence or incorporation.

Ignoring FTA emails. An unanswered request for clarification can hold up the entire application.

What Comes After Registration

Registration starts a cycle of duties: keeping accounting records, preparing financial statements, filing a return for each tax period, and paying any tax due. Planning for these early is easier than doing it at year-end.

A good next step is a Corporate Tax impact assessment, which shows what the tax means for your cash and risks. Planning and structuring questions belong with our Corporate Tax advisory team. Free zone businesses can review their position through free zone Corporate Tax advisory, and businesses with several entities can read about Corporate Tax groups.
